Background of the Study
Medical tourism involves individuals traveling abroad to receive medical treatments that may be unavailable or more expensive in their home countries. While many Nigerians seek medical treatment overseas, there has been growing interest in developing local healthcare services to compete with international destinations for medical tourism (Nwachukwu et al., 2023). Tertiary healthcare institutions in Nigeria, including those in Kano State, are increasingly striving to improve their facilities and services to attract medical tourists.
Medical tourism in Nigeria has the potential to boost the local healthcare sector by improving hospital infrastructure, increasing healthcare investments, and generating foreign revenue (Ogunyemi et al., 2024). However, there are several challenges, including the need for advanced medical equipment, highly trained personnel, and improved healthcare management practices. This study investigates the impact of medical tourism on tertiary healthcare institutions in Kano State, focusing on how these hospitals are responding to the growing demand for high-quality medical services.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential benefits of medical tourism, Nigerian hospitals face significant challenges in attracting and retaining medical tourists. Poor infrastructure, inadequate healthcare quality, and insufficient promotion of medical tourism options hinder the ability of Nigerian hospitals to become global competitors in the medical tourism sector.
This study aims to investigate the impact of medical tourism on tertiary healthcare institutions in Kano State, identifying the opportunities, challenges, and strategies for enhancing the country’s position in the global medical tourism market.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of medical tourism on tertiary healthcare institutions in Kano State.
2. To identify the opportunities and challenges in attracting medical tourists to Nigerian hospitals.
3. To propose strategies for improving the competitiveness of Nigerian hospitals in the medical tourism industry.
Research Questions
1. What impact does medical tourism have on tertiary healthcare institutions in Kano State?
2. What opportunities and challenges do Nigerian hospitals face in attracting medical tourists?
3. What strategies can be adopted to improve the competitiveness of Nigerian hospitals in the medical tourism sector?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: Medical tourism does not significantly impact the performance of tertiary healthcare institutions in Kano State.
2. H₀: Nigerian hospitals do not face significant challenges in attracting medical tourists.
3. H₀: Strategies to promote medical tourism do not significantly improve the competitiveness of Nigerian hospitals.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on tertiary healthcare institutions in Kano State, exploring the impact of medical tourism. Limitations include variations in hospital readiness for medical tourism and potential challenges in data collection from healthcare institutions.
